Edgy pieces slinging profound social and political implications at today’s dilemmas, Tucker Wulf's works evoke the WOW Factor.
Wulf’s innovation began by reinventing the frame. His intent was to expand the entire meaning of the frame so it would contribute to the concept and depth of each piece. The frame truly “frames” the meaning of each piece. The outer edge has musical notes in the form of drops from four of the most iconic musicians of social change. These drops (of songs) fall into waves and whirlpools of the creative conscience driving progressive change. The ten inside figures are from the continuum of social repression, manipulation and the freedom with realization. The frame completes the pieces creating space, depth and dimension.
Inspirations have often come while traveling throughout the United States. The figures are initially sculpted in hotel rooms during those travels. When Wulf first began this body of work, there was no known process to actually cast this work without reinforcing walls to hold the weight. Over the years, he experimented and developed new unique methods to keep his castings light. While each one is completely unique, he has limited the number of castings per piece. Through Wulf’s numerous bronze pours, he has gained an acute knowledge of patinas and bronze effects. He employs that expertise to the Bronze Coatings he applies to most frames. Inside the frame, he uses dozens of layers of paint and washes he often mixes himself from raw pigment.
In addition to a long history of art education, including Pratt in Seattle where he studied Life Sculpture and Bronze Casting, he developed deep conceptual empathy through his work with troubled youth and developmentally challenged adults during and just after his college days. Those insights, along with an immersion of philosophy and an objective view of religion, create the content.
