THE ART OF BIOGRAPHY (REY ZIPAGAN)
Rey Zipagan is a visual artist based in Mission Hills, California, whose work confronts social reality through a humanitarian lens. Driven by a conviction that undeniable facts hold transformative power, his art explores honesty, social awareness, and the complexity of human experience.
Zipagan builds layered, richly textured compositions that probe the tension between perception and reality. His pieces ask viewers to examine accuracy, habitual truthfulness, and the shared truths that shape individual lives and collective society.
Born on the streets of Ilagan, Isabela in the Philippines, Zipagan’s path was defined early by resilience. At seven he sold newspapers to fund his schooling. His creative drive was first recognized and nurtured by his elder brother. After high school he moved to Manila for engineering, but left in his third year to answer a deeper calling — committing himself entirely to art.
Largely self-taught, Zipagan forged a distinctive style from a life of hardship and perseverance. His practice is anchored in values passed down from his father: integrity, compassion, and doing what is right. Those principles remain at the core of both his life and his work.
Technically, he’s recognized for a signature method that blends drying oils with carefully chosen pigments. The result is a vibrant palette and dynamic surface quality that gives his canvases depth, rhythm, and movement — a technique he has refined over decades.

Zipagan’s career includes extensive solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. His work has appeared at the Kerckhoff Art Gallery at UCLA, the Beverly Hills Hilton, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, among other notable venues. His contributions have earned significant honors. In 1993 he won the Grand Prize at the Kaleidoscope National Art Competition in Glendale, California for The Day After, and the Grand Prize at the Philippine-American Exposition and Art Competition for Salvaged. His paintings have been selected for international exhibitions in Korea, Germany, Japan, and Mexico, extending his reach across the global art community.
Zipagan’s work is held in public and private collections worldwide. He has completed commissions for major institutions including the Central Bank of the Philippines, the French Embassy in Manila, Casa Manila, and Malacañang Palace.
Today, Zipagan continues to challenge perception with bold, thought-provoking work. Each piece stands as dialogue and testimony — a life shaped by perseverance, guided by truth, and devoted to meaningful expression.
