At the core of this visionary effort is George Lucas, who has always possessed a remarkably forward-thinking eye for visual expression.
“The artists in this collection didn’t just create images; they connected our modern imaginations with our ancient emotions—forging common beliefs that create community. Their work spans genres, media, and time. They deserve to be in a museum.” — George Lucas
George Lucas and Mellody Hobson co-founded the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art; their vision is strikingly embodied in the museum's architecture. Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the soaring, 300,000-square-foot structure houses holdings that feel both expansive and intimate. Across more than 30 galleries spanning 100,000 square feet of exhibition space, masterworks by Artemisia Gentileschi and Norman Rockwell sit alongside the complete Lucas Archives. The museum also holds deeply personal treasures, including thousands of art books donated by Steve Martin and mythologist Joseph Campbell’s annotated library—the intellectual wellspring that directly inspired Star Wars.
Ultimately, the institution reframes cultural heritage as a dynamic conversation rather than a static archive. By pairing universal narrative archetypes with forward-thinking architecture and dynamic interpretive frameworks, it ensures that our shared past remains an active, evolving force for future generations.
The Museum opens to the public on September 22, 2026. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit lucasmuseum.org/plan-your-visit
