Reflecting on Frank Gehry’s Legacy at Gagosian Beverly Hills

By ACCA Journal, a leading voice in art, culture, fashion, and media, celebrates the intersections of creativity and community that define our era. With national and international distribution.

The landmark exhibition at Gagosian Beverly Hills is now open, offering a cohesive journey through the creative consciousness of the late Frank Gehry.

It is profoundly refreshing to experience this two-part presentation under a single roof, spanning his career from early 1989 papier-mâché experiments to final copper works. The curation begins in the first gallery, welcoming viewers with an intimate look at Gehry’s sketch studies—ink, watercolor, and acrylic works on paper that capture raw, kinetic energy through fluid networks of black line.

This initial intimacy deepens as one transitions into the second gallery, where the atmosphere shifts into a cavernous, dimly lit environment. Here, the sculptures are masterfully illuminated by LED lights, emphasizing the radical materiality and fractured planes that defined Gehry’s storied career.

Gehry, who passed in 2025, was far more than a global icon; to those of us in Los Angeles, he was our "neighborhood architect". Whether strolling through the bohemian streets of Venice or mentoring the next generation at SCI-Arc, he remained a humble, unassuming presence despite his status as a titan of deconstructivism. His bold interventions, such as the Norton House and the Chiat/Day building, remain permanent sculptural markers of our local urban identity

This exhibition, realized in collaboration with the Gehry family and studio, highlights his lifelong obsession with animal forms. Pieces like Bear with Us (2014)—a life-size mammal in gleaming 316L stainless steel that mimics crumpled foil—showcase his ability to transform rigid materials into energetic motion.

We also encounter his "perfect form" in Fish on Fire (2023), the last of his fish sculptures rendered in copper.

These primordial forms serve as the DNA of his architectural oeuvre, informing the undulating profiles of Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The Gagosian Premieres video, documenting his collaborations with Gustavo Dudamel and esperanza spalding, further illuminates this multifaceted creative spirit.

As this precedes the retrospective O Século de Gehry in Portugal, we celebrate a man who reshaped how we perceive the world.

Paul McCartney knows how to pick big stages, and now his photographs are taking center stage at Gagosian. The gallery has embraced a new identity, floating giant walls with a striking visual twist - each side features a giant portrait of each Beatle. This immersive experience sets the tone for the exhibition, "Rearview Mirror," which showcases recently rediscovered photographs by Paul McCartney.

Opening on April 25 in Beverly Hills, the exhibition features 36 works composed of images taken between December 1963 and February 1964. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to acquire selected photographs from McCartney's personal archive, offering a unique glimpse into the Beatlemania era.

The exhibition is set in a specially designed space with black and white walls, creating a striking backdrop for McCartney's photographs. Visitors can also treat themselves to a private screening room featuring footage of the Beatles. The exhibition poster is a must-have, but check with the gallery for its release date.

The photographs on view embody a poignant intersection of time, place, and personality, forming a significant contribution to the visual record of the era. McCartney's lens captures intimate moments of Beatlemania, from self-portraits to unguarded views of his bandmates and vivid depictions of the pandemonium that greeted them.

The exhibition is accompanied by contemporaneous ephemera and excerpts of cinema verité-style footage of the Beatles recorded by Albert and David Maysles. A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to support ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts in Southern California.

Get ready to step into the world of Beatlemania like never before. With its unique blend of photographs, film, and immersive design, "Rearview Mirror" is an exhibition not to be missed.
